May 24 Markesan

I sent a message earlier in the week to my riding pals from Fondy to see if anyone was up for riding either today or tomorrow, Memorial Day, and low and behold, Kevin wasn’t camping either. Which I thought he was. So, I had him and three others who were game for a ride today.

I planned a route with a lunch stop on the southwest side of Green Lake which we have driven by many times on the bikes, but have never stopped… Reilly’s Pub. I think mostly because it is usually very busy. Luckily for us, it wasn’t today and I am certain that was because it didn’t start out very nice weather wise earlier in the day. As a matter of fact it was quite chilly, a little misty and overcast with the fog taking its sweet time to lift when I left Grove. I didn’t even pass one motorcycle on my way to Fondy. Which we planned on meeting at Kevin’s around 10:30.

From Kevin’s I planned a more scenic route to get there instead of taking 23 to K, as 23 probably would also be busy for the holiday weekend anyway. We ended up eventually taking Breakneck to Oak Center Road around the north side of Horicon Marsh, through Waupun, Hwy 44 for a while through Brandon, and some other back roads to K, which is what Reilly’s is on. I think we got there shortly after noon and opted to enjoy the now nice weather on their patio.

From there we back-tracked on K east and a whole bunch of roads south of Green Lake. Eventually heading back east and taking Canada Island Road to A north, and then Blackhawk east around the north side of Fox Lake, and then Cty F east to 68 north, back through Waupun, to 49 to Brownsville. Funny we were talking earlier about having to stop for geese along 49 or in general, and sure enough we had to slam the brakes for some Canadian Geese with their goslings, and even seen a huge snapping turtle along the side of the road, but Denise said she thought he was already a goner.

We stopped for cream at the Triple Scoop in Brownsville, and from there Kevin and I continued towards the Kettles while the other three headed home. We took a bunch of roads, including SS and S, Troute Springs Road and eventually ended up on U where he and I split up heading our separate ways home.

It turned out to be such a glorious day for riding and it felt so good! Really getting back into the groove. Between the two routes I tracked and Kevin’s below, I estimated I did right around 190 miles. Which is really good to help get me conditioned for our big trip in a couple of weeks, as next week are the cycle races at RA and I won’t be riding at all that weekend. It was also very nice to get some of the old crew together since I didn’t ride much with them last season.
