I was trying to find people to ride with since Kevin, Pete and Sue were going camping with the bikes up to the UP and Northern Lower Michigan for a few days, which isn’t my thing. Luckily Tom was available, so I planned a route for us to take to Baraboo first for lunch at the old Hooty’s which is now the Pumphouse, and then onto and through Devil’s Lake. Well so much for a planned route, hence I ended up taking us off of that shortly after getting west of Fondy, but that was okay because we took a bunch of roads I hadn’t ever been on or not in quite a while. Given it was a holiday weekend it was very busy in and around Devil’s Lake. We were lucky enough though to find a spot to pull over and park along the public road that goes through there to snap a few pictures. From there we planned to go to Merrimac and take the Hwy 113 Ferry. We figured that would be extremely busy too; however, no one on our side heading south was waiting in line when we pulled up. Lots of cars waiting to go north on the other side, which was pretty much the case every where we went today… lots of traffic heading north. Come Monday it will be the opposite direction so if I ride that day too, I will need to plan the route accordingly. Okay, back to today… We took County V along the Wisconsin River on our way back going through Dekorra. We ended up on Hwy 51 north past the Columbia Energy Center power plant so we pulled in there to get an up-close look and snap some pictures. From there we took County P to Fox Lake, Hwy 68 to Waupun and Hwy 149 to the Horicon Marsh were we pulled in to see if they had put the boardwalks back in place. They were not and that section was still drained. When we were getting ready to leave a couple on a bike asked if we knew how to get to County B because they wanted to go to Kelley Country Creamery. We were planning on heading that way around Oakfield so I told them they could follow us up until they needed to turn off, and they did. We put in 191 miles today and it was another perfect day for riding. Sad to notice so many signs indicating our riding season will be coming to and end somewhat soon, such as: the cranes and birds starting to flock before they migrate, the sun so far south in the sky, corn turning yellow and brown or already harvested, and the dark brown fuzzy caterpillars crossing the roads, but we’ll take what we can get. Thanks again Tom for joining me today! Map and pics below...
