May 24 Tornado Alley

Today was the first time I was be able to get back on my new ride since tipping it over, due to extra chilly and rainy weather since then. Well, almost any riding since that weekend, except taking my old ride to work one day, and luckily, Kevin was around and available to ride today too. No planned route, but knew we’d want to head away from here and more inland to where it would be warmer, as it is still a little cooler than normal. Especially near Lake Michigan.

He was ready before me, so I asked if he’d meet me here and he was fine with that. Before he showed up, I ran the bike for a little while and also adjusted the damper on the shock one more click to softer, with hopes to get a little more relief on the suspension when I am sitting on it. However, I am not sure if it helped. Maybe a little with the stiffness in the suspension while riding it, but that was probably it.

I was pretty skittish out of the gate today and it took me quite a while before I felt comfortable again, but it did eventually come back!

We went through parts of the northern Kettle Moraine, but hardly at all on the Scenic route, and Kevin suggested we meander to Theresa, Mayville and Juneau to see the aftermath from last week’s tornadoes while he was on his big trip through the southeastern lower 48. So, we did just that.

We didn’t see much around Theresa, but sure did as we came into Mayville from the east side, along the golf course, and then making our way to MEC and Gleason’s where their buildings had direct hits made to them. Mostly Gleason’s vs. MEC's. We also stopped and walked around to check it out and take some photos. From there we headed around to take Cty W south, just west of there where you could see was the beginning of the path of the tornado which hit Mayville, and there were a couple of properties which had been hit pretty hard and more trees twisted or down.

From there we headed into Horicon from the east with the idea of getting something to eat at Leroy Meat’s brat fry for lunch, which we did and then headed south out of Horicon before making our way west towards Juneau where a local farmer had made the news which had endured some extensive damage, including a cow who had been impaired by a 2x4. Luckily she is okay. However, we had no clue which rural area around the Juneau it was located, but it wasn’t hard to miss it as we approached from the east, so we took a couple of roads to go right by it. Then when we made it into town along Hwy 26, there was significantly more damage, including one of the house’s roof had been completely taken off, with lots of tree damage.

We took Cty W west out of Juneau to Cty A north into Fox Lake, and then Hwy 68 to Waupun, where we stopped for ice cream, and also a coffee for myself, at Guth’s. We sat outside while eating our cream and then headed east on Hwy 49 through Brownsville and some back roads, including Cty K to Cty B into Eden, where Kevin and I broke off, with him heading north on Hwy 45 and myself south to Cty B east again, back into Armstrong and then I took Cty G all of the way north to Cty C east before heading into Glenbeulah to continue on Cty C to Cty J and then some back roads into Grove.
