June 29 Algoma

Today was going to be the warmer, much warmer, day for the weekend and I haven’t been on the bike in two weeks. I also finally received great news that a garage where I live became available. So, last night I planned a route for Kevin and I to meet in Greenbush and eventually back to my place so he could give me a ride to my car at the storage unit after dropping off my bike in my newly acquired garage.

We met around 9:30 and Kevin was already there when I arrived, as I stopped to gas up in Glenbeulah. From there we headed north taking Cty S into Glenbeulah and then Cty A to J into New Holstein, and then a plethora of back roads into St. Nazianz for a planned lunch stop at Meat’s Opera Haus, where we were going to eat with Brad on Mother’s Day, but they only had brunch that day. We arrived just before 11 and were told they were already serving lunch, so we split what was supposed to be a double bacon cheeseburger, but was only a single. Oh well, that means more room for ice cream!

From there I planned a bunch of county and back roads west of Manitowoc and eventually onto Lakeshore Road north of Two Rivers and then onto Hwy 42 to Kewaunee. The many times I have taken Hwy 42 to Kewaunee, Algoma or Door County I always wondered where to get onto Lakeshore just south of Kewaunee, and now I can say I know and have been on it.

I had only planned the route to Kewaunee, but we still wanted to go further and hoped there might be a place in Algoma with Cedar Crest ice cream. When we arrived there a Kewaunee Sheriff waved to us from his squad as he passed and I’m a guessing he is a motorcyclist too! We also intended to make a rest stop along the bay in Algoma, but it was blocked off for their fire department’s 150th anniversary celebration. However, we found a dead end towards the lake off of Hwy 42 north of Algoma with some shade, so we stopped there for a break and water before heading back to Kewaunee for our original planned ice cream stop. On our way back we stopped at a park along Lake Michigan for a bit. Then off again to Kewaunee Custard & Grill. By this time it was extremely warm, so ice cream was quite well in order and we both had sundaes. Yummy!

From there Kevin planned some of the route back to Grove taking Cty V east off of Hwy 42 and through a state park north of Two Rivers which has some really nice curves, but unfortunately we got behind slow traffic. Seemed the theme for the afternoon: getting behind vehicles not even doing the speed limit, and man it was hot! We were going to take Hwy 42 from Trivers, but they had downtown blocked off for some celebration too, so we had to take 310 to get back to 42, and then we stayed on it through most of Manitowoc before connecting onto Lakeshore Road south out of town. Eventually we meandered east on Cty C to Hwy 42 then all the way to Grove. It was stinking hot by this time and I could hardly get my jacket off by myself as I didn’t wear the airflow today.

We dropped off my bike in my new garage and then I got onto the back of Kevin’s bike for him to take me to my car at the storage unit. While I was there, I finished loading up my car with what was left from yesterday, so that I wouldn’t need to go back tomorrow to clear it out.

Below is a map Kevin provided and the red is us together, but I also did around 25 miles to meet him in Greenbush. Just a bit shy of 200 for the day and it felt oh so good, until it became so sticky hot and a bit windy.
