Sept 2 Port Wash

Since the weather is expected to be unseasonably warm this weekend and even my extra day off, Tuesday, today was the only day anticipated to be the coolest; only in the 80s. So, Kevin and I thought it would be a good idea to head towards Lake Michigan and more specifically, Port Washington.

After washing my bike and chain, and having dinner (Salmon from Kevin’s fishing adventures out of Port) the night before, I planned most of the route for tomorrow and left the rest for Kevin.

I wasn’t able to get to Kevin’s until 10ish and it was actually pretty cool, overcast and even what looked like rain not too far off, but when I checked the radar noticed it was well off to the north and didn’t even look as though it would materialize here. It was so cool in the morning I didn’t even go for my walk. With that said, I opted for the non-airflow jacket and was very comfortable the whole time to Port.

When we got near Port I suggested lunch at Inventors Brewpub, the place Kari and I wanted to eat at on Juneteenth, but it was closed that day. However, I was pretty certain it would be open on the Saturday of a holiday weekend, and it was. It is in an old building near the harbor which also houses their local American Legion. Really neat old building. I ordered a really healthy lunch (not): buffalo chicken brewtons and cheese curds which were really good.

From there we took a walk out to the lighthouse and found a very non-skittish cormorant who allowed me to get really close for some photos. I’ve never been able to get this close to one before and it was so cool to see all of its details up close. As a matter of fact, I have been seeing some around Lakeside Park lately as they must be already migrating south; which is the only times I see them, in Spring and Fall, and there were a bunch of them around Port today.

We also came up on an old wooden sailboat with solar panels on its stern and a guy wearing a kilt fishing off of it. Not your every day sighting!

By the time we started heading back to the bikes the heat was really beginning to ramp up, including humidity as it appears the showers had moved south to the Manitowoc area. However, still sunny in Port. By the time we got out of Port my whole back was soaked and as we came into Belgium, I pulled over so that Kevin could open up the back vents of my jacket to allow some air flow. It helped a bit, but I was still cooking!

We eventually got back under some clouds, but I was still extremely warm and just wanted to get home. So, I was speeding well enough that I had to slow down a few times to allow Kevin to catch up. I think he was smarter than me and wore his air-flow.

We broke off just south of town where I opted to take Lost Arrow Road  and other back roads to avoid driving through town because I was so hot.

This probably will be the only day I will ride over the holiday weekend since it actually got up into the 90s today and will be close to 100 the remainder of the weekend. Boo hoo!!!
