We were in store for another beautiful day, so Kevin and planned on riding and I also planned a route to Nekoosa and back. Luckily, today wasn’t as windy as yesterday either.
We left right around 9 from my place and took a pretty direct route most of the way to Nekoosa: Hwy 23 to Hwy 73, but shortly after Princeton we took some back roads not on the initial route just because they looked good and we had never been on them before.
Unlike what we usually do when around Nekoosa, we took Hwy 173 out of town heading west to Bancock for a planned stop for breakfast/lunch at Bucks N’ Berries Family Restaurant at the intersection of Hwy 173 and 80.
Althouh I had used the satellite view for yesterday’s route to avoid any gravel roads, I didn’t do the same for today’s ride and that was a mistake. Especially since our ride last year in this area when finding not just gravel roads, but sand ones too. Which I had laid my bike down on the sand one last year. However, Kevin was keen enough to check some of the roads out I chose around the Hardwood Artillery Range, and he removed one I chose that was gravel. Yet, low and behold one he chose turned to gravel too, and I really thought it looked pretty loose so I took it very slow. Slow enough Kevin passed me so I was literally eating his dust. Yuck! It seemed like we were on it for an eternity as well, but only around 3 miles before it ended.
From there we meandered through Friendship/Adams, Grand Marsh and Montello before making our way back to Princeton with a planned stop for ice cream at the Ice Bowl. They had a band playing there which was a bit obnoxiously loud for an ice cream stop, but still there was ice cream! Oh, and we certainly did not get the same portion for a single dish compared to yesterday’s single dish at the Sweet N’ Saulty. Hmmm!
From there we dropped south around Green Lake and eventually connecting on Cty T/Rogersville Road back to town.
It ended up being a pretty full day of riding and I guess the miles prove that: 258.
