Today was the day to make it to the Merrimac Ferry and thankfully Kevin was able to join me since nobody else could.
He met me at my place around 9:30 and we took mostly highways to get to at least past Portage to save some time. From west of Portage we took some back roads meandering through the bluffs into the south end of Baraboo where he planned for us to stop at The Tumbled Rock for lunch. It is a brewery and restaurant built next to the old Hooties just outside of Devil’s Lake. Brings back memories from when I lived in Madison and we’d go to see Road Trip at Hooties.
It was a very nice establishment, very fast service and excellent food. I don’t usually do this, but I was so impressed with the food, I had to take photos of it!
From there we drove through the west side of Devil’s Lake and got hung up in stop-and-go traffic near the south beach entrance. From there it was off to the Ferry. When we passed the sign for it on Hwy 113 it was flashing which said indicates it is closed. Which it had been due to hydraulic issues, but was posted it was back open a couple of days ago. Fingers crossed we proceeded there and it was up and running, with very little traffic. We didn’t even fill it up. We were the only ones in our lane.
From there we took a bunch of county and country roads with a pit stop in Fall River, then onto Horicon for an intended stop for ice-cream at The Ice Cream Station. Yum, yum!
We were five miles short of 200 and I thought for sure we’d hit it due to reroutes we ended up having to take due to construction. Oh well, never the less, it was a fantastic day!!!
