Sept 19 Port Washington

I had originally planned to ride with a gal I used to work with at Weasler; however, she contacted me to let me know she had a migraine and would need to cancel. Wasn’t really sure what I was going to do, but Kevin remembered that I was going to do this today and that I had told him he was welcome to join us if he liked. Well, he did so it was just he and I for today, and since it was so warm and sticky we decided to head to Port Washington.

We left town around a little after 10 and without a planned route. Just to hit some of the Kettle Moraine on our way there, which we did but not as much as we’d hoped. Although, without having a planned route, we ended up on a lot of roads we’ve never been on before; including one that was gravel where a car apparently didn’t see him after I passed and almost took him out. Not cool, especially on gravel. Grrr, and his headlights are way brighter than mine.

Anywho, we arrived in Port around 11:30 and much to my surprise there were tons of open parking spots right along the main drag. So, we parked and walked down to Shooner Pub for sandwiches. From there we walked out to as close as we could to the lighthouse. They still have a small portion near the end closed off. He was surprised because he hasn’t been there since they tore down the old yacht club/restaurant. I was there around June, I think, so I had seen the new building going up already.

From there we took back roads to Oostburg and Sheboygan Falls. From Falls we took Hwy 32 to Cty O which is nice an curvy. And, since we were so close to Elkhart Lake and it was so warm, we stopped in at Gessert’s for some ice-cream. When we were leaving a guy was checking out my bike and I thought he was going to ask what it was, but instead he approached me and told me liked my Nicky sticker. I thanked him and said peace to Nicky. I should have told him that I got it from Nicky Hayden himself, back in the late 90s when he was still riding for HRC.

From there we took just about the same roads as yesterday back to town from the Elkhart area. Didn’t see much for colors except some maples in spots, but saw lots of soy bean fields which had already dropped all of their leaves and field corn already harvested. As a matter of fact, we passed quite a few trucks hauling the field corn for silage and just as we were passing one on Cty C heading towards St. Cloud a huge plume of white spray came off of it and I ran right threw it. I was somewhat covered with it and had to stop in Mt. Calvary to clean my visor. Grrr again, cause I just washed my bike last week.

Anyway, it felt really good to get in a more substantial ride for today.
